How to set up Google Authenticator with MFA

Although the images display Okta Verify, the instructions are also applicable to other authenticators. Unlike Okta Verify, with Google Authenticator, if you delete the app or get a new phone, you can redownload the app, sign in to your account, and continue using your authenticator codes.

Accessing QR Code to Scan

On your computer, please go to login.usa.edu and sign in.

Click Configure Factor.

Choose your mobile device type and click Next.

Stay on this screen. Do NOT click Next yet. Follow the Google Authenticator steps below.

How to set up Google Authenticator

  1. Download the Google Authenticator app on your phone from the app store and click Get Started.

  2. Click Continue as [Your Name] to sign in using your Google account.
Signing in with your Google account ensures your codes are saved and transferred to a new device in case you lose your phone or get a new one. Please create one if you do not have one.

  3. Click Add Code or the + symbol.

  4. Select the Scan a QR code option.

  5. Click Allow if it asks to use your camera.

  6. Scan the QR code on your computer screen to get your Okta codes. Click Next.

  7. Copy the code displayed in your Google Authenticator app. The codes expire every 30 seconds.
Do not share your code with anyone. IT Support will never ask you for this code.

  8. Enter your code on the next screen and click Verify.
  9. Done. Your account is now secure with two-factor authentication. You will be able to log in whenever a USAHS website requests your Okta code.

Codes are not reusable, so you will need to obtain a new code when prompted to enter one during sign-in.
