Setup Okta Verify - Two Factor Authentication

The University uses multi-factor authentication for you to be able to access your account. This is to provide an extra layer of security to ensure account are secure and not easily accessible to entities trying to gain unauthorized access to your account. We have created an easy-to-follow instructional video to set up your MFA. This is NOT limited to the okta Verify app. Other examples of apps you can use are Duo Mobile, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, etc... The instructions work the same when setting up other authentication apps.

 

Step 1: Sign in to Your Okta Account

  1. Go to login.usa.edu
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. Complete your existing MFA step (e.g., SMS, email, push).

Step 2: Access Account Settings

  1. After signing in, click your name or profile icon in the top right.
  2. Click Settings from the dropdown menu.

Step 3: Scroll to the ‘Extra Verification’ or ‘Security Methods’ Section

  • Look for a section called “Extra Verification” You may need to click the “Edit Profile” button at the top of the page in order to make any changes.

Step 4: Add a New Authenticator App

  1. Find the option for OKTA Verify.
    • You may use other Authentication apps (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc.)
  2. Click Set up, Add, or Enroll next to that option.

Step 5: Scan the QR Code

  1. Open your authentication app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap + to add a new account.
  3. Choose Scan a QR code.
  4. Use your phone to scan the QR code shown on the Okta screen.

Step 6: Enter the Code

  1. The app will now generate a 6-digit code.
  2. Enter that code into the Okta prompt to verify setup.
  3. Click Verify or Next.

Step 7: Confirmation and Default Setting

  • Okta will confirm that the new MFA method has been added.
  • You may be asked if you want to set it as your primary/default factor—choose Yes if that’s your preference.

Step 8: Done

  • Click Finish, Done, or simply navigate away if the changes are saved automatically.
  • You should now see your authenticator app listed as one of your security methods.
